Ali Buchanan, LMFT

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and the founder and lead clinician of Align Relationship Therapy. I specialize in working with couples to foster deeper connection and intimacy and I also provide compassionate and supportive therapy for individuals facing life transitions, stress, or emotional concerns.

I earned my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Syracuse University and hold both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Health Education from Ithaca College. My professional background includes relational experience in health and sexuality contexts in the U.S. and abroad, which continues to inform my work with couples around sexual health, intimacy, and relational dynamics.

My Approach

I work with individuals and couples who want support in understanding what is happening in their relationship and deciding how they want to move forward. This includes people addressing long-standing challenges, responding to a rupture such as infidelity, or seeking to be more intentional in their emotional and physical connection. Many of my clients function well in other areas of life, yet come to therapy feeling frustrated or discouraged by dynamics that haven’t shifted despite their best efforts.

My approach is relational and systems-based, with close attention to patterns, emotional dynamics, and the broader context in which relationships develop and change. My style is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental, while also direct and engaged. I am an active participant in the room, helping couples slow things down, interrupt unhelpful patterns, and transform conflict into opportunities for connection. The work is designed to support both insight and meaningful, usable change, with an emphasis on accountability and intentional communication.

I draw from contemporary relational and systemic therapies, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Imago Relationship Therapy, and Gottman Method principles. Integrating these approaches allows me to tailor the work to the needs of each individual or couple while remaining grounded in evidence-based practice. I work with couples and individuals across a wide range of identities, relationship structures, and life experiences, and approach this work with respect, curiosity, and care.
